A springtime contrast on the desert-A gay blossom of yellow atop a giant barret cactus which sometimes grows six feet tall over a 20-30 year period. They contain a slimy juice often reputed to have saved lives on the hot, arid western deserts but hardly fit to drink otherwise.

Excerpt from Message

I've just come in from to days on the desert - Palm Springs and D.H.S. and am glad to be back in cool, cool L.A. Saturday I visited the Grahams in Pasadena. They are in Oakland this week with Alice who is beginning classes in Oakland. I often think of the beauty and graciousness of the S.D.C. and the area. With love, Jo
