Description
This panel, inspired by the new edited volume Gendered Defenders: Marvel’s Heroines in Transmedia Spaces, seeks to detangle the complex and contradictory web of how the House of Ideas has expanded and evolved its approach to gender, sexuality, and identity with its rich cast of female heroes – as well as how these depictions have evolved with changing attitudes toward gender and feminism. In addition, this panel will interrogate how the move from solely comics-based storytelling to the crafting of characters and narratives for film, television, video games and more have both aided and complicated these discussions. Implications for feminist theory and textual reading of media – and how we can use these characters to develop feminist pedagogy and discourse – will be provided.
