The Calico Mountains overlooking the Mojave Desert northeast of Barstow, Calif., provide one of the nation's most spectacular displays of colored rocks and clays. Known for their famous silver bonanzas of the 1880s, the Calico Mountains also have deposits of jasper, quartz, iron, manganese, and clays of different hues.
