Abstract

The purpose of my study was to engage with students around the topic of hazing to better understand how student leaders can influence hazing prevention efforts on college campuses. My research question was: How can I incorporate student leaders in hazing prevention work centered around restorative justice to have a greater impact in the Interfraternity Council community? By participating in restorative justice community building circles, students gained a greater understanding of how brotherhood often bleeds into hazing in fraternity communities, which led them to an increased ability to take ownership of their own community. My hope is for a greater understanding of this alternative form of hazing prevention to inspire higher education professionals to prioritize inquisitive education versus accusatory education within the context of hazing prevention.
