Dorothea Melinda Melden
A pictorial bookplate on sepia paper with black ink addressed to Dorothea Melinda Melden. There is a big statue with a sailboat on top and writing on the side, "To be honest/to be kind/To earn a little and to spend a little less/to make upon the whole a family happier for his presence/to renounce when that small be necessary and not to be embittered to keep a few friends but these without capitulation/above all on the same grim conditions to keep friends with himself/Here is a task for all that a man has of fortitude and delicacy. R.L.S." Beneath it are two mythical creatures with wings and books in between them. The creature sitting on the left is playing an instrument with birds sitting on it. The creature sitting on the right has an owl on their shoulder while reading a book.
