Caption
Black Butte from Sun Fish Lake - There are numerous volcanic cones scattered throughout this part of California. One of the best-known is Black Butte, also called Muirs Peak. Its cone is almost perpendicular to a height of almost six thousand feet, close to the base of Mount Shasta - black, bare and desolate, an extinct volcano, with half a dozen craters in plain view.
