Caption

Laguna(the lake) was founded in 1699 and is the youngest of the pueblos. It is 66 miles west of Albuquerque. It is perched up on a sterile hill, in a compact cluster. This form of habitation was the outcome of the needs of the people. It is a fortress and built with every eye alert to its defensive qualities. The Pueblo Indians tilled the soil and provided for their needs; their neighbors were nomadic and war-like. The entrance was originally by means of a ladder to the roof of the lowest story.
