The city of Santa Fe, permanently settled by Europeans in 1605, antedates the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth Rock by fifteen years. Old Spanish wood-carvings and Spanish and Italian oil-paintings may be seen in the church. The date of the rebuilding of San Miguel, 1710, by the Marquez de Penuela, is carved on the main beam of the qallery.
