Abstract

The purpose of my study was to help Latino/a students in the Puente Project at Southwestern Community College (SWC) navigate their first year of enrollment and to encourage successful transfer to a four-year university within two years. At the same time, I helped students reflect on their experience in the Puente Project as they overcame obstacles in their first year of enrollment at SWC. The Puente Project's mission is to increase the number of Latino/a students transferring to four-year institutions through counseling and mentorship (Southwestern College, 2016). This study utilizes Stephen Kemmis’ (1988) Simple Action Research Model as a framework to collect data through activities, interviews, and surveys to explore the factors affecting Latino/a student transfer thus improving retention and transfer.
