The figure is reaching towards an open chest with the text "HOPE CLEMENT" above it. The ornate frame around the image features floral and foliate moJPEGs, with "CLARA ERSKINE CLEMENT" printed at the bottom, alluding to the owner of the bookplate. The artist’s signature "S.L.S. 1899" is visible in the lower right corner.
