Description

A pictorial bookplate in black ink on off-white paper. The design features a central oval frame with an image of bookshelves filled with books. Surrounding the central image are ribbon banners with the text “Dartmouth College Library” at the top, and “1769” and “1901” on either side. At the bottom, a ribbon banner reads “The Gift of Mellen Chamberlain Class of 1844.” The outer border of the bookplate includes the names of various famous libraries and figures in the history of libraries, such as “Alexandrina,” “Palatina,” “Vaticana,” “Laurentiana,” “Marciana,” “Astor,” “Lenox,” “Boston Congr.,” “Bodleian,” “British Mus.,” “Mazarin,” “Nationale,” “Lessing,” “Mai,” “Panizzi,” “Winsor,” and “Poole.” The initials “F.G.M. Del.” are located at the bottom left, and the artist’s initials “J.W.S. Sc.” are at the bottom right of the bookplate.
