Description

A pictorial bookplate in sepia ink on off-white paper. The design features an ornate frame with decorative elements. At the top, the seal of the University of Michigan is displayed, including the Latin motto “Artes, Scientia, Veritas” and the year “1837.” Below this, the text reads “Library of the University of Michigan.” The central image depicts the Michigan state coat of arms with an eagle, two deer, and the mottoes “E Pluribus Unum,” “Tuebor,” and “Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice.” Flanking the coat of arms are branches with leaves and flowers. At the bottom, there is an inscription that reads “Class Library”. The artist’s signature, “J.W. Spenceley,” is located at the lower left of the bookplate.
