Description

Every medium has its particular set of affordances that sets it apart from others and the medium of comics is no different. The inherently hybrid aspects regarding text and image and how they function in the medium is a central aspect of the methods by which comics thrive in collaborative exercises. Another quality of comics is the extremely hybrid and symbolic mode by which they convey narrative. Whether a comic is being created by the full script method or the plot first method, the narrative has to be translated by and artist and a writer. Sometimes those individuals are the same person. However, more often than not, it’s a creative team that executing stories in the comics form. This presentation by John Jennings will be about his career in comics that spans almost twenty years and the various ways that Hip Hop, science fiction, social justice and collaboration are the engines that drive his practice.
