Madame John's Legacy. In the New Orleans' French Quarter. Madame John's Legacy at 632 Dumaine Street, in the New Orleans French Quarter, is the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley. This old structure, immortalized by Washington Cable's Creole stories, has a long colorful history dating back to 1726 when the first owner, Jean Pascal, a sea captain from Provence, France, came to New Orleans. Here Captain Pascal lived with his wife and daughter until he was slain by the Natchez Indians in the massacre of 1729. The building is of the raised cottage plantation type and of entirely different structure than most of the other houses in the French Quarter.
