Abstract

This poster helps librarians take advantage of MERLOT to integrate ICT literacy – and their expertise – into their site’s and system’s educational program. MERLOT stands for Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching. Established by the California State University system, MERLOT is a community-built repository of over 70,000 learning objects that can be repurposed for several kinds of instruction.

To support and expand the use of this federated collection, MERLOT provides several value-added features: bookmark collections that collate MERLOT and outside resources, learning activities based on single learning objects, a same webpage course builder tool, and an eportfolio tool.

Librarians, other educators and post-secondary students can join MERLOT for free. The membership enables them to create their own MERLOT products and add to the collection. MERLOT offers additional ways to build a sense of community: discipline-based communities, academic support services, online discussion board, newsletter, and blog.

“Housed” within academic support services, the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Literacy Project focuses on integrating ICT literacy into subject curricula. The main source of resources is MERLOT, to which have been added over three hundred learning objects as well as 26 bookmark collections, courses and learning exercises, and thirty subject-specific resource guides. The ICT Literacy community portal (http://teachingcommons.cdl.edu/ictliteracy/index.html), explains how to find ICT literacy learning objects, ICT literacy standards, and guidelines for ICT literacy enhanced assignments.
