Abstract

The emergence of AI, specifically generative and large language models (LLM), ushered in a major technological advancement that has significantly impacted education, particularly teaching and learning. The increasing proliferation of these AI-enabled tools is starting to change how we engage with our work and daily lives. In open education and OER, discussions about its implications are beginning to emerge, including concerns about authorship, attribution, responsible use, ethics, and privacy. How might integrating generative AI with OER change its nature and our engagement with these resources? How might we leverage the power of OER and generative AI to create engaging learning experiences that benefit learners? This workshop will introduce participants to the issues we must examine in this new and ever-changing landscape. Together, we will explore AI's current applications and possibilities in OER. Through hands-on exercises, we will explore OpenTextbook AI, a generative tool that uses open textbooks as training data, and examine how this might impact our usage and engagement with open materials.
