Abstract

The purpose of the Master's thesis is to display the ability to do in depth research and present that information in a manner in which it will be of service. This project has been designed to preserve the memory of the Douglas Hotel and Creole Palace Night Club, the most remarkable hotel and night club ever to grace the city of San Diego. Located south of Broadway, the hotel and night club provided the only place of quality lodging and entertainment for Black visitors to the city of San Diego during a period of intense segregation in the United States. The importance of presenting this information in a video format comes from knowing that the events in the lives of African-Americans pass from generation to generation by "word of mouth." This type of information transfer has caused a lot of valuable information to become lost. Much of the African-American experience in Southern California that has been written remains unknown by the vast majority of people in Southern California. The histories of Black, White and Brown San Diegans are not isolated from each other. They happen at the same time affecting each other to the extent that one cannot have an understanding of the city of San Diego unless the history of everyone is included.
