Abstract
This thesis compares California's three mid nineteenth-century Mormon settlements their origins, purpose, and ultimate abandonment. I argue that despite their common bond of faith, these three settlements differed tremendously because they were created for distinct reasons and at a perplexing time in the Mormons history.
