University Records

 

University Records document the history of the University of San Diego from student organizations to university departments and administration. Records generally include correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, policies, and photographs.

Finding Aids are tools used to aid research by describing the materials in a collection. University Records Finding Aids include historical and/or biographical information along with a description of the collection and a folder listing of the content. If you wish to view a collection please contact University Archives and Special Collections staff.

Photographs, scrapbooks, and videos give a glimpse into student life and Associated Students leadership between 1990 and 2008.

    These records document the movement by students and faculty members, primarily Gail Perez and Eugene Labovitz, to establish an Ethnic Studies program at the University of San Diego. Records include departmental history and reflections written by Dr. Perez, Dr. Labovitz, and students. Information on the Irvine Foundation Grant that was awarded to USD is included. Records also include information gathered about Ethnic Studies programs at other universities, and information about establishment of the United Front Multicultural Center. Video footage, news coverage, and photographs of the November 30, 2000 Walk for Consciousness rally are also included.

    Guide to the Esther LaPorta Donor Relations records

    Esther LaPorta

    Esther LaPorta collected these records during her tenure at the University of San Diego. LaPorta gathered historical records about the founding of USD to provide context during donor events. Correspondence between Bishop Charles Buddy and Mother Rosalie Hill, for example, were used to construct the narrative for the 1999 President's Dinner. Correspondence between Bishop Charles Buddy and members of the Nolan family, articles and manuscripts written about the founding of the San Diego College for Women and the early history of the University of San Diego, and records pertaining to President Author Hughes are also included. Of particular significance are interview transcripts of Author and Marge Hughes. These interviews were conducted in March of 1995 as the Hughes' were preparing to retire from the University.

    Documents pertaining to the University of San Diego Capital Campaign, as well as artifacts used to recognize significant donors are also included in these records. Capital Campaign records include reports and evaluations of the campaign.

    William L. Shipley

    Father William Shipley taught in the Philosophy Department at the University of San Diego for 45 years. His papers document the merger of the College for Women and College for Men particularly as it affected the Philosophy Departments. Additionally, Shipley's papers include meeting minutes, notes and memoranda from the various committees on which Shipley served as well as records from the Immaculate Heart Seminary and the St. Francis Seminary.

    Records dating 1961 to 1996 include Honors Convocation invitations and programs as well as planning materials for the Convocation, correspondence regarding award recipients, and copies of letters sent recipients. Also included are some materials regarding the Kappa Gamma Pi St. Catherine Medal award. After 1996, records solely include the Convocation program. Years 2004 and 2010 are currently missing from these records.

    This collection consists of binder materials from the 1991 New Employee Orientation. Materials include handouts, forms, handbooks, and department information. While some department information is scarce, sections such as the Capital Campaign, Development, and University Relations contain promotional materials and brochures for the University. These records give a snapshot into what New Employees learned at the outset of their time at USD.

    The Mission San Diego de Alcalá Excavation records document the nearly twenty years of excavation work conducted during a University of San Diego course led by Professors Raymond Brandes and James Moriarty. Among the records are course materials, newspaper articles, photographs and negatives, research materials, maps, and audio recordings. Course materials include planning materials for the course, informational materials for students, and documentation of excavation work. This includes notes about work conducted during class sessions, inventories of found artifacts, and drawings of the excavation areas. Aerial photographs taken of the Mission San Diego de Alcalá site, and topographical maps created in preparation for excavations are included. Additionally, photographs of found artifacts and of the excavation site are included. While excavation occurred, gravesites of soldiers and priests were found and identified. Photographs and drawings of these findings are included in this collection. This collection also includes publicity about the course and clippings of newspaper articles written about the course. Record of excavations conducted in Old Town, particularly photographs, are also included.

    These records include the extensive research conducted in preparation for the course. This includes research about Mission San Diego de Alcalá, about California Missions, and about Father Junípero Serra. Bibliographies of collected materials are included, along with maps and primary source materials. Additionally, audio recordings of James Moriarty giving tours of the excavation site are included.

    In addition to materials directly related to coursework at Mission San Diego de Alcalá, materials pertaining to the proposed multipurpose building are included. Among these materials are correspondence regarding the proposed building, inquiries about the work conducted at the site, and the 1979 Environmental Impact Report created for the building.

The annual activities conducted by department Director, Linda Scales, are documented along with calendars, fliers, brochures, and job search resources offered to students. Planning materials for campus interview events are also included.

    The Office of Institutional Research records consist of documents and data compiled for national surveys and reports, accreditation, institutional analysis and planning. These are the records compiled to use in the University of San Diego Fact Books, federal and state accreditation mandates, and planning purposes for improving the institution. These records include data compiled for the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU), the California Postsecondary Education Commission (CPEC), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Systems (IPEDS), and the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS). A large portion of these records are the raw documents used to create statistical data and reports. This data covers topics such as trends in disciplines, departmental programs, overall college enrollment, grade distribution, faculty workload, faculty salaries, admission/acceptance studies, student retention and persistence analysis, graduation rate calculations, and grade distributions. Also included are articles from the Chronicle of Higher Education and USD Commencement materials dating 1980-1990.

    This collection contains the memorabilia, primarily certificates and awards, and videos of the University of San Diego's first three Presidents. Inauguration materials for both President Hayes and President Lyons include congratulatory certificates from various institutions, inauguration invitations and programs, news clips, and inaugural celebration videos. Awards for President Hayes and President Lyons include plaques, certificates, and commemorative plates from a variety of institutions including the United Way, the County of San Diego, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Materials from President Hughes' tenure include meeting minutes from Hughes' establishment of the Administrative Council, materials for Hughes' retirement, and a Heart of San Diego interview with Dr. Hughes. Interview videos of President Hayes, commemorative photographs of President Lyons and Lyons' 2003 State of the University address are also included.

    The Office of the Provost records document the administrative functions of the Provost. Key among these are records compiled for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation and planning materials for the Strategic Long Range Plan. Records cover historical background and information on key programs and academic departments administered by the Provost. Also included are faculty research and sabbatical reports.

    The Office of the Registrar records contain reporting information for the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). These annual reports contain statistical totals for USD enrollment including student enrollment in each degree area, gender and ethnicity totals, freshman profiles, and graduation rates. Correspondence regarding report completion is included. Also among these materials are graduation rate data collected for the Student Right Know disclosures as well as a recruitment plan for Fall 2002.

    These records document the functions of the Paralegal Program, formerly known as the Lawyer's Assistant Program, through its first decade. Records include statistics on program applicants, meeting materials of the Advisory Committee that organized the program's functions, reports from the American Bar Association, program descriptions, and plans for the future of the program. News, clippings, news releases, pamphlets, and brochures featuring in the program are also included.
