Abstract
The popularity of youth sports has grown significantly over the years. Parents, coaches, even agents, are constantly looking to find the next great athlete. The aspects of self-interest and egocentricity that are present in AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball have highlighted the shadow side of recruiting in college athletics. However, it is possible (as well as important) to consider the cognitive growth of children at this level of basketball through different leadership lenses. Transformational leadership and the leader-member exchange theory (LMX) have been applied in a number of contexts and across various industries. However, these theories have been underrepresented in the realm of sports. This project will aim to focus on transformational leadership and the leader-member exchange theory, and how these theories relate to the cognitive development of children as they age.
