Abstract

In this presentation ArtCenter College of Design will report on an IMLS-funded pilot project which incorporates human-centered design process into innovative access experiences of archival collections. As a collaboration between the Interaction Design Department and the Library, groups of students from multiple disciples such as interaction, product, graphics and environmental design are currently working with design faculty, archivists, and librarians. In a structured studio class, following innovative pedagogy in emerging technologies, industry methodology and library best practices, they conceptualize and prototype new ways of discovering, exploring and accessing archival materials. While recent digitization has improved accessibility to these collections, ongoing challenges remain in actually interacting with materials. Our presentation aims to detail and evaluate the design process, which we hope can be replicated by other institutions through prototypes and a toolkit of best practices.
