Abstract
Currently, most open access policies, initiatives, and mandates focus on research outputs. Harbingers like open peer-review and digital humanities show us an open access future that is dynamic, multimodal, and apparent at every stage of the research and scholarship lifecycle. The authors consider the enduring values of open access along with details on new outputs. They will also expose the barriers that continue to co-exist with the positive outcomes provided by open access. The future of open access will touch upon many components of digital libraries, such as: content evaluation, rights management, privacy, accessibility and discoverability, and digital preservation. The authors will discuss these components and how they may be dealt with in the future.
