Abstract
The Mission San Diego de Alcala has over 200 years of History hiding within its walls and outlying areas. These numerous historical treasures await to be revealed through timely research in archival repositories all over the world. The Mission first operated as an Indian Mission, and was later converted to a Military Post with ongoing agricultural endeavors before, during, and after their presence. The next occupation of the grounds by an industrial school for Indian children lasted for a number of years, and finally, after a major restoration, became a Parish Church as it still is today, and was its original intention. The San Diego Mission has experienced a variety of caretakers in addition to the periods of complete abandonment. This thesis is intended to relay pertinent information to the reader through elaborating on the Mission San Diego's various occupationary periods, and hopefully will prompt others to explore further research on California's first Mission.
